Nello Corporation

South Bend, Indiana

Under an aggressive fast-track schedule beginning in late December 2014, Panzica’s team raced to achieve substantial completion as planned in just 11 months, receiving the certificate of occupancy in November 2015.

Project numbers are impressive: Situated as part of a 62-acre Panzica master-planned site, the property includes a 2.5-acre, 16′ deep “lake” that required excavating one million cubic feet of soil and can retain 7,500,000 gallons of rainwater. The Nello building is 35 feet tall at the eaves and encompasses 164,000 square feet of office and production space, with 102,000 square feet of that covered by 11 bridge cranes from 15-to-20 tons capacity, engineered to collectively lift and move around the building 350,000 lbs. all at once—the equivalent of simultaneously hoisting 100 automobiles. This capacity allows Nello to efficiently manipulate large pieces of solid steel that are fabricated into utility poles and transmission towers.

The centerpiece of the operation is a multi-million dollar brake press capable of bending a 10-foot wide by 60-foot long by up to 1.5-inch thick solid steel plate into a half-pipe section. In the next operation two such bent sections are joined together in a 120-foot long robotic seam welder. These manufacturing efficiencies enhance Nello’s position as a leading global producer of poles, towers and components for power, cellular communications, wind energy pylons and broadcast antennas.
